Our life is made up of daily habits and activities. What we do each day makes us who we are.
Planning the future is another way I help my clients.
Thinking about who and where you want to be in the future will help you create it faster. I have clients work on a vision statement. They dream about five years in the future. Then they describe what their life will be like on a daily and weekly basis.
How do they want to live?
What does their day look like?
How does the week look?
Who is in their life?
This is an amazing thing to do. Before I found this, I hadn’t taken the time to really look at what I wanted in life. I just kept working. I was busy and in demand. But what did I really want?
We have plans for most things in our life. But have you ever looked at what you want in the future?
I did my first vision statement during coaching training. In that vision I had balance in life and work, I had a thriving business and I was traveling around the world house sitting. It was vision of a beautiful life. It was what I want my life to be.
Without dreaming you won’t know what you want in the future. Picturing your future life will give you direction and it can make it come true.
Once I had the vision I needed to start figuring out how to get there. What habits needed to be in place to actualize my dream?
The first thing I decided to start was house sitting. I had a path, now I needed a plan. How do I make this happen? I researched and then signed up with an online housesitting service.
Within three months I went on my first house sit.
Another important part of my vision was to be more involved in the local community. With that in mind I started to figure out ways to make it happen. I started volunteering, networking and fostering new relationships. My community is now filled with a many interesting people.
With my vision in place, I didn’t have to think about what I wanted, I just needed to figure out how to make it happen. Which is creative and fun.
This does not mean you can’t make changes along the way. The plan is fluid and can change often or not at all. You get to decide. When you add a new habit, you get to decide if you are happy with it.
The plan also helps to keep you on your visioned path.
When I first started my business, I felt I had to work all the time to make it successful. My yard was a mess, I wasn’t exercising, I wasn’t seeing friends or traveling much. I didn’t have the work/life balance that I wrote about in my vision statement. I needed to make a change.
I went back to my vision statement and started to implement some of the things that would bring balance back to my life.
I started slowly. Instead of sitting at my desk because I “should” be working, I gardened. I found that the ideas flowed so much faster than at a desk.
I started listening to podcasts while walking. I actually kept up with professional development. I learned new things and I was feeling better physically.
I decided a way to clear my head was to cycle regularly. I schedule regular biking. Not only did I get in better shape, I felt better mentally. Now I write a draft of something then I jump on my bike. As I spin so does the message in my head. It always gets so much better because my mind is clear.
If I do not have a plan for the week or the day I will feel like I get nothing done. I like direction. I need a plan to get the things done to keep me on my path to having the life I want.
A vision statement is just a detailed description of you having achieved your five year goals.
When I didn’t have a plan, my life still kept moving forward. It was like I was floating in a river. I had some control but the current had its own agenda.
Do you have a plan for what your life and career will look like in 2 years? 5 years? 10 years?
Is your life now what you thought it would be?
How would it be different if there was a plan?
